A receptacle mostly of glass made, aquarium is a facility in which a collection of aquatic, either marine or freshwater, can be found. It can be put up in a house or any interior environment as an interior décor enhancement or aquatic organism display. To marine biologists, aquariums are constructed for the purpose of scientific research of aquatic animals. Breeding of aquatic animals can also be made in aquariums.
In 1853, the Regent Park in England was the first to display an aquarium publicly. However, aquariums have been known to exist in ancient Rome, Asia and Egypt. Ancient people have come up with an idea to construct aquariums when they are breeding fish. In China, breeding of goldfish has an ancient origin and still remains among the most popular kinds of hobby not only in the Asian country but in other parts of the world. Breeding of goldfish would always require aquariums.
Aquariums that are kept in homes are shaped differently. Although the water containments for aquatic animals are mostly glass-made, any container that can be filled with water and is capable of keeping aquatic creatures can be considered aquariums. But then, aquariums are usually deemed for display of living water creatures. Thus, transparent containers such as glass-made bowls and tanks are preferred and are mostly referred to as aquariums.
Collecting home aquariums is one of the popular hobbies around the world. When breeding of fish is a hobby or a business, it could come with different shapes and sizes of aquariums. The aquariums that can be kept in homes are mostly smaller in sizes. However, it depends on the preference of fish-breeders and aquarium hobbyists. Some big-sized aquariums can also be found in homes when some individuals keep large aquatic animals.
Aquariums can be found in many major world cities. There are public aquariums and commercial ones. Aquariums can be found in theme parks, resorts, seafood restaurants, some establishments and in homes.
Research institutions of marine creatures are abundant with aquariums. They are constructed and maintained for study and breeding purposes. The sizes of aquariums may differ in this kind of facility as the sizes of aquatic animals for keeping also varies.
Aquariums for public exhibition are visited and watched and can be considered as tourist spots. Different species of aquatic animals can be found in public and commercial aquariums. Georgia Aquarium at Atlanta; Monterey Bay Aquarium at Monterey; California, New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts; and Tennessee Aquarium are some of the aquariums that can be found in the United States. There are also aquariums that can be found in different parts of the world.
