Most engagement rings are diamonds, and these precious stones are supposed to last forever. Diamonds last forever because they are one of the hardest substances available. These stones are symbolic of a love that is supposed to last forever like the diamond. The diamonds in these rings usually last longer than the bride, and many of these diamond rings are passed on to children and grandchildren. Diamond rings as a sign of commitment and love sometimes last longer than the commitment or the love unfortunately.
After a woman receives her engagement ring, she is supposed to wear it on her left hand as a sign that she has made a commitment. All of the members of a society that recognizes these rings as a sign of commitment will immediately understand that this woman is committed to be married. Most people get married after their engagement although many people do change their mind after accepting a ring. The women who eventually get married after their engagement continue to wear their rings with the wedding ring that they receive during their wedding ceremony. The wedding ring is also worn on the left hand as a sign that the commitment is final and should last forever.
