What Is the Point of Engagement Gifts?
Wedding gift scams start early with the expectation of engagement gifts. It is kind of difficult to understand who exactly would give the couple engagement gifts at the announcement of their engagement.
Is the groom expected to give engagement gifts to his new blushing bride? I hope not seeing as how the groom is expected to shell out thousands of dollars for an engagement ring in the first place that is the whole reason for an engagement celebration. Making the groom also worry about engagement gifts is a little cruel.
What about the bride? Is she supposed to bury her groom in lovely engagement gifts? Are you kidding? The bride IS the engagement gift for the groom so that is all he can plan on getting as far as gifts go until the wedding. Then we move on to the rest of the family.
The family of the bride is expected to pay for most of the wedding so the notion that they are also going to invest in engagement gifts is probably a bad one. That is a lot to ask one family to do so do not expect it. What about the family of the groom? Does anybody know what the family of the groom is supposed to be doing besides supplying the groom for the wedding? Maybe the groom's family can shell out some extra cash for the engagement gifts seeing as how they are sticking the bride's family with the wedding bills. Actually the groom's family is expected to host an engagement party and those are expensive enough.
The Wedding Party Maybe?
So moving down the line the next logical choice would be the members of the wedding party. Well, since we are still in the engagement phase there probably isn't a wedding party yet so that idea will not fly. So that leaves us with no one. So the point to all of this is that announcing you are getting engaged is not a time for gifts because engagements are broken all the time. That is why people wait until the couple actually makes it to the altar before they start giving gifts.
See you have to nip these things in the bud before they get out of control. Next thing you know couples will be expecting gifts from people at their one month anniversary and that is when everything will just be completely out of control and unnecessary.
