Various Projector Technologies Used in Projection TV

Large screen television technology is increasingly considered a trend in program viewing and visual home theatre system. If you want to have large-sized television from 40" to whopping 108" screen size, you may have to choose a wide selection of formats and brands of television. When considering for large size televisions nowadays, many would go for plasma television or LCD televisions. These are the popular flat-panel television nowadays where the 100" size of screen is available.

Projection TV is also another format in large size television technology found in the market. It uses projection technology making it possible to have wide screen closely similar to that of home theatre. It utilizes a projector in creating in magnifying a small image from a video signal to a screen.

Projection TV can be found in various projector formats. They are CRT projector, LCD projector and DLP projector.

The CRT projector used in CRT projection television is smaller than the CRT in traditional television. A phosphor-coated screen is used in this format where images are projected from firing electrons to the screen. It may use more than one CRT to enable viewable images on the screen.

LCD projection TV uses a small LCD chip while digital light processing projector utilizes a digital micro mirror device to create an image. A combination of LCD and DLP technology called LCoS or liquid crystal on silicon.

There are various advantages and disadvantages found in projection TV. The pros and cons may vary on the different technologies used in projection TV.

CRT projection TV can have better viewing angles than LCD. CRT technology achieves the clearest color reproductions than other types of display technologies. Though it can last longer than other types, it is bulkier than LCD or DLP projection TV which would require more space in placement.

LCD projection TV is smaller in width than CRT projection TV but not as slim as DLP. Burn-in cannot be experienced when viewing the projection TV with LCD projector unlike CRT but it is likely that a screen-door effect can be seen by the viewer.

Screen-door effect cannot be experienced when watching on a DLP projection TV however, it is likely that an unwanted visual artifact called the rainbow effect can be seen in DLP projectors.

Moreover, DLP projection TV has better viewing angles than LCD but similar to LCD which utilizes lamps for illumination, the part should be replaced regularly.

Projection TV's can be seen in various brands. Philips, RCA, Samsung, JVC, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, Hitachi and Akai produce projection televisions.

Projection TV can now be found in HDTV format.
