Flying Games for Leisure and Learning
Some people are just so obsessed with something that in most parts of their lives you can see it. Some are obsessed with cars and you will notice it on the t-shirts they wear, the badges they have, the collection they keep and the hobbies they do. Some people are so obsessed in flying. Air crafts, war birds, Cessna planes - you name it, flying has always been a fascinating subject since man thought that he could fly like birds. Today, there are many hobbies that are related to flying and one of these is playing flying games.
Admit it, but in today's market of video games, you will find a video game for virtually every type of subject whatever platform it is, Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation or WII. Flying games like the Flight II Unlimited, Air Sea Battle, Raiden Fighters Jet, Zarch, Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, Dropship: United Peace Force and R Type are just some of the most widely played video flying games. These games range from all sorts of flying, from US Air force to general aviation, from NASA space ships to video game version of Hollywood blockbusters.
One of the earliest and popular flying games that came out before the 3D animation age is the Air-Sea Battle which was developed by the Atari Company in the year 1977. This game can be played in either multiplayer or single player mode and requires the use of a joystick. The Air-Sea Battle had nine versions in the series and included six unique game plays: the torpedo games, shooting gallery games, Polaris games, bomber games and the Polaris versus bomber games. Today, an updated version of the Air-Sea Battle game can be played on PS2 and Xbox platforms.
In military flying games, one of the games that stand out is the Dropship: United Peace Force which debuted in 2002 for PS2 consoles. Dropship is based on a fictional international military organization with the objective of counter-attacking terrorists. One of the best selling points in this game is its influence of the 9/11 tragedy. Developed by SOHO and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Dropship is available on single player mode and on DVD-ROM medium.
Although most flying games embrace the theme of aircraft combats, some flying games are meant to be educational. These games are called flight simulators. A popular title is the Microsoft Flight Simulator X which helps student pilots in preparing for actual flight trainings. For leisure or for learning, flying games definitely are a true testament of mans' unending fascination in flying.
