Shopping For Hawaii Real Estate

For the purposes of discussion, Hawaiian real estate can be broken down into the six islands that make up Hawaii. Because of the tremendous amount of tourists who have visited Hawaii in the last 50 years and fallen in love with it, Hawaii's population and its real estate prices have exploded.

Visitors are drawn to Hawaii because of its spectacular beaches, wonderful scenery, and tropical climate that cannot be found any place on earth. Fresh floral air invigorates you as you start to feel young again.

Hawaii Real Estate - Oahu

Although this island is only the third largest, it is the most populated of the six islands. Because of all the people living on this island it is also known as "The Gathering Place." The state capital of Honolulu is located on the southeastern corner of the island.

The island of Oahu consists of 600 square miles of real estate that is 44 miles long and 30 miles across.

Hawaii Real Estate - Maui

This is the second largest of the six islands, ranks third in population, and consists of 727 square miles. Maui is also called "Valley Isle" for the large fertile isthmus between its two volcanoes.

At one point sugarcane cultivation used over 80% of the islands water supply, taken from tunnels that were hand dug by the Chinese laborers.

Hawaii Real Estate - Kauai

Consisting of an area of 552 square miles, Kauai is the fourth largest of the six islands. It is also known as the "Garden State" and is considered to be one of the wettest spots on earth. Some much rain has fallen over time that deep valleys have been eroded carving out canyons with majestic waterfalls.

Hawaii Real Estate - Molokai

This is the fifth largest of the islands, being 38 miles long and 10 miles wide. The lights of Honolulu are clearly visible at night from the west end of Molokai. The lights of nearby Lanai and Maui are clearly visible from anywhere along the south shore of the island.

Hawaii Real Estate - Lanai

This is the smallest of all the islands and is also known as the "Pineapple Island." It is only 140 square miles and many of the roads are only accessible with a four wheeled drive vehicle.

Hawaii Real Estate - The Big Island (Hawaii)

This is by far the largest of the six islands consisting of 4,028 square miles, which is more than the other five islands combined. This island was created when five separate volcanoes erupted overlapping each other.
