Getting Rid of Itchy Legs While Running

Itchy legs while running is a fairly common problem despite how strange it may sound. If you have just started running or have not run in a long time then you may be susceptible to itchy legs while running. There are a few reasons for this happening and usually it is pretty easy to remedy itchy legs while running. However there are cases where you might have to see a doctor.

What Causes Itchy Legs

If you have just started running then your itchy legs are the result of your capillaries expanding. When your body has not been inactive for a while the capillaries collapse and allow the minimal amount of blood needed for inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle.

When you exercise the capillaries need to expand to allow more blood to flow throughout your body. The nerves around these expanding capillaries send an impulse to the brain that is interpreted as an itch. The more you exercise the less you will feel this sensation as your capillaries remain open. After a few workouts you should stop having itchy legs while running.

If you have been running for a while and have itchy legs while running then it could be the weather that causes the itchiness. Cold or cool weather tends to dry skin and although your skin may itch while your not running it will get worse when you do run. Sweating will only make your dry skin itchier and it will feel like running is causing your legs to itch. This is easily remedied by using a good moisturizer everyday.

An mild allergy can be exacerbated by sweating and exercise. If you are wearing a fabric, soap, detergent or lotion that you have never used before then it could be the reason your legs feel itchy. Wear clothes that allow the skin to breathe easily to avoid irritation and if your skin is very sensitive avoid soaps and detergents that are perfumed and allergy safe.

In severe cases itchy legs while running may be serious enough that you need medication. If you have hives as well as itchiness then you should see a doctor. This condition might also be triggered by certain foods, if you notice itchiness and hives after eating certain foods while running then cut these foods out. Your doctor will be able to prescribe something to help you control the symptoms and avoid anything that might trigger this reaction.
