Writing Your Own Marriage Vows
Gone are the days when brides and grooms would repeat the same old marriage vows and people in the wedding party and in the church pews could take a short nap as everything was so predictable. Nowadays, most couples prefer to write their own marriage vows because it makes them ever so personal rather than just reading something from a book that gazillions of people have uttered before you.
Traditional vs. Personalized
The traditional marriage vows are not part of Holy Scripture so they need not be revered in that respect. However, they have been tried and tested and are pretty comprehensive as they include most of the things a couple would like to proclaim to one another. So if you like to go the well treaded part and are not a big fan of being different, then perhaps you would like to stick to the same marriage vows that your parents and grandparents exchanged.
However, if unique is your middle name, then you would want to write your own marriage vows and usually not even let your spouse know until the very moment when you exchange them. You need not be a wordsmith par excellence to write exquisite marriage vows. They just have to come from the heart so anything that you are feeling you can say. It could be about where and when you first met, or how he proposed or when you felt he was the one etc.
Women are more in to writing their own marriage vows as they are traditionally known to be more emotional, romantic and better with words. Guys don't really care too much about these formalities and just feel they want to cut right down to it and say I Do, kiss the bride and get on with the partying.
However, if she wants you to write your own marriage vows you don't really have much of a choice. Write down a few basic things and then ask a friend to help you word them. However do not go for a vow downloaded form the internet or straight from a book, you will get caught. Let the words flow from your heart even if they are not perfect in grammar or sentence structure. Say something funny or read out a poem by her favorite pet so that she feels like you went to the trouble of doing something special for her.
Practice your marriage vows in front of a mirror and in front of some close friends. Your marriage vows should not be too formal but they should not be too cheesy either. They should be personalized and you should mean them. Semantics are far from the issue at hand, so just enjoy yourself!
