Blumenthal Performing Arts Center is the outcome of the consolidated efforts of the citizens of Charlotte, corporations and foundation and the state government of North Carolina. Belk Brothers Company made one of the contributions in 1987 by donating a parcel of land located in the Center City Charlotte.
Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in North Carolina is named after the Blumenthal Foundation, the largest contributor to the capital campaign of the Center. Its complete name is North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in honor of the people of North Carolina who have made donations to make the performing arts center possible.
North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Art Center is designed by a renowned architect Cesar Pelli. One of Pelli's projects aside from the North Carolina's Center is the Bank of America Corporate Center which is adjacent to the entertainment complex.
The performing arts center located in the Center City Charlotte has three spaces. They include the 434-seat Booth Playhouse, Studio Theater which has 150 seats and Belk Theater which can occupy 2,100 seated individuals.
Blumenthal Performing Arts Center was constructed for three years and was opened in November 1992. The Spirits Square Center for Arts and Education is an addition to the mission of the performing arts center in Charlotte City. Initially a First Baptist Church built in 1909, Spirit Square has been transformed into a community that focuses on community theater and art education. The sanctuary of the church has been transitioned into a theater with a seating capacity of 720. The theater which is called McGlohon Theatre in honor of the late Loonis McGlohon, a jazz pianist is considered a pride of the Spirit Square Center.
The second theatre in the center of Spirit Square is Duke Power Theatre, a black-box style 180-seat entertainment facility. Aside from community theatres, the Center has a satellite campus of Northwest School of Arts.
Blumenthal Performing Arts Center is the resident entertainment center of different performing arts organizations such as Opera Carolina, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Community Schools of the Arts, ArtsTeach, Carolinas Concert Association and Charlotte Symphony.
