Developing School Time Management Skills

School comes with many benefits including the ability to make friends, take part in sports and activities and delve into various academic pursuits. This is true of college, high school and even grade school. However, many students find school overwhelming and this can lead to poor grades. While there can be a number of factors that contribute to this the general culprit is often poor school time management.

When it comes to school time management it is critical to follow a few basic steps. These steps will do wonders getting a student on track for better school performance provided they are followed. The steps are as follows:

Dedicate some time on Sunday to plan out your school related responsibilities; prioritize the list; look at what things are set in stone and out of your control (for example, a test 9am on Tuesday); and then set aside the proper amount of time during the week for homework, study, etc. Also, it may be wise to cut out on things that aren't necessary. If you are spending too much time at the mall then your ability to partake in effective school time management will be impacted.

Deliberation and Planning is the Key

Granted, things can come up that can throw a schedule out of whack; if this occurs do not fret it. Instead, simply try and follow your school time management schedule as best as possible. After all, the purpose of such a schedule is to provide focus to what otherwise lacked focus. With this focus you can plan accordingly so as to improve performance. It is as simple as that. Ok, maybe it isn't so simple but it is worth a try!

On a side note, if there was one huge mistake students make it would be ignoring the extracurricular fun activities associated with school. Now, some may be shaking their head at this because many students are usually told leisure time is often the root of failing grades and poor performance. Well, excessive leisure time combined with a refusal to take responsibility for school work is a bad plan. But, an equally bad plan would be to study all the time and never take any breaks. This would be a horrible idea because it leads to burn out. When a student is burned out then a decent academic performance is next to impossible. So, always set aside some leisure time as part of you school time management plan!
