Surfing Safely: Online Time Management
Over the past decade, the internet has become a main source of livelihood for many people. However, while many people have made their careers on the internet, there are others that spend all of their free time on the internet. The result is a gradual loss of reality, and so these people need online time management.
Online Time Management Means Knowing Boundaries
While the internet can be fun, it can also be very dangerous. There are internet predators out there, whose goal is to prey upon young children. Various pornographic websites get people of all ages in trouble as well. This is where online time management comes in.
Everyday, various internet developers find new ways to get people sucked into the internet for longer than just the time it takes to check e-mail. So, online time management involves taking the time to check the important things, but to leave the more frivolous things for when you truly have time.
For example, there are various online virtual realities that have been created, in which people take their roles way too seriously and require some serious online time management. An excellent example of this is World of Warcraft. This game has millions of players that spend hours upon hours questing around in an alternate reality, forgoing real life in the process.
Even for people who are not considered gamers, online time management is exceedingly important. It is quite easy for someone to go online to look up one thing, and end up spending hours online, simply because one thing leads to another.
People will even go so far as to spend hours online during the work day at their office. Luckily, employers have become wise to this, and limit online activities by blocking various websites and web chatting options.
Indeed, the internet has become like a drug in its appeal, and it is very hard for many people to think of a time when it did not exist. So, what would happen if the internet ended tomorrow? The answer is that there would be many people who would not know what to do!
However, the reality is that the internet is just becoming bigger, and shows no signs of stopping. What people can do is take the good aspects of the internet (e-mail, online jobs) and leave the bad aspects. With the proper moderation, the internet can be a place where people can be productive, and not just idle.
