How To Combat Social Anxiety Disorder Procrastination

Those with social anxiety disorder may find that procrastination follows them wherever they go. They'd rather do scrub the toilets than go to the grocery store. Washing the windows seems like a picnic when compared to going to a movie. Anything is better than stepping out that front door, but there are ways to combat the procrastination that comes from social anxiety disorder. Here are a few.

Make A Plan

If new places make you want to do the laundry instead, a good way to head off procrastination about going to a new location is to scope the location out before hand. Plan out your route to the location if you have never been there. Call ahead of time and ask about parking, location, and anything else that may make it more comfortable for you to know. For example, if it is a new restaurant, you could ask if a waiter will seat you, or if you will be seating yourself. Knowledge is half of the battle to fighting your anxiety disorder procrastination.

Take Someone

Combating your anxiety disorder procrastination can be as easy as finding a travel buddy. Make a plan to take someone with you, not only for support but also for the motivating factor of having someone expecting you to go. You can't change your mind and stay home if you know that your brother is driving over to pick you up or your husband took time off of work to take you to the doctor.

Distract Yourself

Sometimes the worst part about going out can be the waiting before hand. Distract yourself with other activities until you get to the time you have to leave. Every time you start to think about your trip, immediately start a project that will occupy your mind, like a doing crossword puzzle, playing solitaire, talking on the phone, instant messaging a friend, checking your email, or making a to-do list.

Jump On It

One of the best ways to avoid procrastination from anxiety disorder is to not give yourself time to procrastinate. Schedule appointments for first thing in the morning so that you don't have all day to think about them. Go run an errand right after work, don't go home first. Never give yourself time to back out or stay home.

A combination of the tips above can at least alleviate some of the procrastination from social anxiety disorder when used on a consistent basis.
