Shanghai: The Fast-Developing City of China

Shanghai is a city that lies in the mid-east coastline of China that is also the gateway to the Yangtze River delta. The total area that Shanghai, China occupies is 3,940 sq. miles with a total population of 16,000,000. The city has a pleasing climate with four seasons and the normal temperature is 18° Celsius with a yearly precipitation of 1,240 mm.

Originally, the city of Shanghai, China was a fishing municipality. However, it became the most focal city by the 1900's because it became the center for culture, education and politics while it was known as the Republic of China. It was once the third largest financial capital of the world next to New York and London and also the biggest commercial city in the late 19th century and early 20th century in the Far East.

When communism took over the city in 1949, the city of Shanghai, China suffered under extreme government taxation and decrease in foreign investments, with a lot of upper class people emerging. However, Shanghai, China surpassed other neighboring cities after the approval of Market-Economic Redevelopment of Shanghai in 1992. After the authorization of this plan, the city of Shanghai led the economic growth of China.

Currently, Shanghai, China is an open city that is famous for historical villages, museums, parks, treasures and shopping avenues. Its municipality is subjected to the direct control of the Central Government that is the biggest economic center, industrial port and base of China.

Shanghai, China is very popular all over the world not just because of its wealthy cosmopolitan characteristics but also because of its rich resources. In the past few years, a lot of modern buildings were added to the city like the Shanghai National Museum, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Library, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Stadium, Shanghai Circus World, Shanghai City-Planning Exhibition Hall, Shanghai Science & Technology Museum and Jin Mao Tower. All of these state-of-the-art buildings have now become tourist attractions in country.

The city is also very popular for its colorful festivals like the Shanghai China International Art Festival and Shanghai Tourism Festival that attracts both local and foreign tourists.

After Shanghai won the bid for sponsoring the World Expo in 2010, all divisions of preparation have already begun its work and are now in progress. Other countries have recognized the full potential of China and in return the city of Shanghai will add splendor to the whole world by ushering exceptional opportunities for growth and development.
