Ambien For Insomnia Helps Patients Fall Asleep Quickly
Everyone suffers occasional problems getting to sleep or staying asleep throughout the night and many drugs are on the market to help with the lack of sleep. Ambien for insomnia is one of the prescription medications available for use with occasional periods of insomnia that have been proven safe for most people to use. The drug name zolpidem sold under the brand name of Ambien for insomnia is also available in an extended release formula to help people stay asleep.
The drug is shown to have a half-life of between two and three hours, meaning that every three hours the drug will lose half of its effectiveness. When testing Ambien for insomnia it was found that people generally fall asleep within 15 minutes, but many were waking up in the middle of the night. This led to the development of the extended release formula to help keep the drug in the system allowing the patient to remain asleep.
One the prime precautions when using Ambien for insomnia is it should only be taken when the patient can devote eight hours to sleep, especially with the extended release formula, otherwise they may feel groggy the next day. Ambien will make a person fall asleep and should not be taken during normal waking hours and unless the patient has seven or eight hours that can be devoted to sleep.
Some Reactions Resemble Amnesia
There have been several reports of people taking Ambien for insomnia who, after taking the pill, have talked on the phone or participated in conversations or activities and after sleeping have no memory of the activities. It is highly recommended that taking Ambien for insomnia should be done at bedtime with the night devoted to allowing the drug to work.
Some of the side effects listed for patients taking Ambien for insomnia include rashes, swelling of the face, lips and tongue and although rare, if any of the symptoms occur the patient should stop taking the drug and contact their physician. As with most insomnia medications, taking Ambien for insomnia should be on a temporary basis and only while under doctor prescription.
As with all medications, there is always a risk of interactions with other medications. Persons prescribed Ambien for insomnia should avoid taking over the counter drugs that list side effects of causing drowsiness, as the interaction can be dangerous and even fatal. Always consult with you doctor about taking Ambien for insomnia while taking other prescription medications as well.
